What Is a Gossip Protocol?

The terminology gossip protocol refers to peer-to-peer (P2P) communication between computers and other electronic devices. The name was influenced by the traditional kind of gossip popular among social groupings.

Deeply Understanding the Concept of Gossip Protocol

In computer science, gossip protocol basically refers to communication that happens when data is sent between computer nodes that are part of a dispersed network. A gossip protocol communication occurs when information is sent from one computer to the other until it is eventually distributed throughout the network, as the name implies. Presently, multiple Gossip protocol versions can be applied to various scenarios relying on the user's or business's demands.

Types of Gossip Manifestations

According to Márk Jelasity of the University of Szeged, there seem to be two sorts of Gossip manifestation: information propagation and information aggregation. These two categories are essential components of large-scale distributed systems. 

On the one hand, gossip dissemination, often known as multicast, is related to the classical data distribution method (one network node at a time). Aggregating gossip protocols, on the other hand, process data; that is, they first summarize and then distribute the data. This sort of gossip communication is also known as distributed data mining.
