To maintain the stablecoin’s value, the protocol automatically opens short positions equal to the value of the deposited assets, so that the profits offset any decline in the value of the collateral, a mechanism known as delta hedging. Assets are also held with independent custodians rather than on trading platforms, which reduces the risk of hacking or asset loss. Through this mechanism, USDe tokens maintain their peg to the dollar even during periods of market volatility.

If negative funding rates persist (where short sellers pay long holders), Ethena uses its reserve fund to cover costs and protect the US dollar peg, the reserve also serves as a last line of defense.
