What Is a Transaction ID (TXID)?

A transaction ID (TXID) is a distinct string of characters assigned to each confirmed and added transaction to the blockchain. In other words, a TXID is a unique identifier assigned to every transaction on the blockchain. Whenever a transaction is created and added to the blockchain, it is assigned a transaction ID as a distinct identifier. 

It may then be found in a block explorer by looking for the transaction ID, depending on the blockchain used. This could be useful for validating basic transaction details, including the amount transmitted, the date of transfer, the sending/receiving address, or the number of network confirmations acquired.

Here is an example of the Transaction ID (TXID) of Satoshi Nakamoto's first Bitcoin transaction to Hal Finney:  f4184fc596403b9d638783cf57adfe4c75c605f6356fbc91338530e9831e9e16

You may even search for these transactions by pasting the TXIDs into a Bitcoin block explorer like blockchain.com or several others. Whenever you make a withdrawal of a cryptocurrency from a centralized exchange (CEX), the platform will display the TXID of your transaction. 

This may be found on the centralized exchange's History page. If you tap on a TXID for a specific withdrawal, you'll be taken to the transaction on that blockchain's block explorer. If you accidentally send funds to a wrong address (or blockchain), the TXID from your withdrawal history is required to begin investigating whether you can reclaim your funds. Even so, it's not a certainty, and you should contact assistance on the site from which you're withdrawing.
