The informal term "tank" came from traditional financial markets and represents a significant negative financial performance of a specific asset. As a result, an asset is considered to be "tanking" when its price falls rapidly. The phrase tank can also apply to a certain industry or firm that is underperforming. 

Another popular interpretation of the term, particularly in traditional markets, is that an asset or even a portfolio is deemed "in the tank" if its financial performance over quite a long period of time is considerably dropping in value.

The phrase "tanking" is frequently used as the inverse of "rallying," just like the terms "dumping" and "pumping" are. A rallying (or pumping) asset is one that enjoys a rapid, short-term rise in value, whereas a tanking (or dumping) asset is one that experiences a strong and quick fall in market pricing. 

Another phrase for tanking is "bleeding," which refers to a drop in market values. Nevertheless, bleeding frequently refers to a long drop that occurs over time instead of a sudden and sharp drop.
