What is Sentiment?

The sentiment (or market sentiment) is a term used to describe the highly subjective feeling about the state of a market. It sums up the overall trading behavior that traders and investors are showing regarding the price of a particular asset.

The market sentiment is made up of multiple factors. It can include information from fundamental analysis (FA) and technical analysis (TA) indicators. In addition, recent business and global news and price history usually influence the process.

New traders must remember that market sentiment and fundamental analysis are both entirely different factors. The market sentiment is based on investment behavior and emotions, while fundamental analysis is more linked with the financial performance of a specific business or cryptocurrency project (e.g., reputation and market capitalization).

How to Read Market Sentiments

Many traders and investors cite the market sentiment as a good indicator of expected short and mid-term price trends. As a rule of thumb, when the sentiment is positive (bullish) or negative (bearish), the market usually reverses and moves in the opposite direction. 

This means that the market tends to go up when most traders are bearish and goes down when the genral sentiment is more bullish. This means that the market sentiment can often be used as a reversal indicator by contrarian traders.

The market sentiment is one of the primary things contrarian traders use in trades. If the market is bullish, they will place trades for selling or place short orders. If the sentiment is bearish, they will usually opt to buy or open a long order.

In short, market sentiment can be influenced by the effects of two emotions that impact the financial market. One is fear, and the other is greed. As a result, market sentiment is a very useful tool for understanding market behavior. 

Attempts are continually underway to gauge and measure market sentiment by applying behavioral finance and economics concepts.
