What Is an Off-Ledger Currency?

An off ledger currency is one that does not live on the blockchain or any other distributed ledgers, such as all currencies used by nations. Whereas an off-ledger currency is not created expressly for a blockchain, it may be utilized in one due to its functionality and widespread popularity. 

An Example of an Off-ledger Currency

Because central banks release it from outside blockchain networks, fiat money is a form of an off-ledger currency. The US dollar (USD) is a classic case of an off-ledger currency because of its value and is often held as a reserve currency by many financial organizations. 

Contrary to the on-ledger currency, it is centrally regulated and issued with no restrictions. As a result, off-ledger currencies have no fundamental value. Instead, their worth is determined by a government's endorsement and subsequent proclamation as legal money. 

The ability of central banks to issue and control fiat money gives them ultimate influence and authority over the economy. However, bad actors can still counterfeit them. And, if unregulated, their issuance might have a negative impact on economies.

Understanding the Concept of Off-ledger Currency

Off-ledger currencies, unlike on-ledger currencies, do not require constant incentivized computational power (or any other consensus mechanism requirements) to function. Several off-ledger currencies are digital currency equivalents, such as USD or EUR, that are used on blockchains because of their stability and prominence. 

Because their value is still generated from off-ledger currencies, fiat-based stablecoins (tokens tied to the value of nation-state currencies) may be included in the definition of off-ledger currencies.
