Hash Rate
Hash Rate
What Is Hash Rate?
A hash rate is a measurement unit for the amount of computational power the network uses to run constantly. The hash rate and combined computing power of a certain cryptocurrency network, as well as the power of a single mining rig on that network, are interchangeable.
Any mineable cryptocurrency, such as Bitcoin (BTC), is supported by its very own network of miners: people and organizations who contribute the processing power of their mining rigs to process transactions and generate new currencies.
They accomplish this by computing cryptographic hashes and pseudorandom data strings to prevent duplicate spending and ensure that new coins cannot be created out of thin air.
Exploring the Full Scope of a Hash Rate
A mining rig's hash rate is the number of hashes it can calculate per second. A cryptocurrency network's combined hash power is the total sum of the hash rates of all the active mining rigs at any given time.
Hash rates vary based on the device, like CPUs, GPUs, and ASICs, as well as how well-optimized they are for executing a given hash function. The hash rate of a single device is an important statistic for determining the profitability of a mining setup since it determines the possibility of discovering a "good" hash that will result in a mining payout.
The total hash rate of a cryptocurrency network, on the other hand, is an indication of that coin's security: in order to hack the network for personal benefit, attackers must surpass its total hash power, which is almost impossible at high enough hash rates.
The hash rate is generally expressed in hashes per second (h/s) with a SI prefix, like mega, giga, or tera. For example, a blockchain network that calculates one trillion hashes per second would have a hash rate of 1 Th/s. Bitcoin's hash rate reached 1 T/s in 2011 and 1,000 T/s in 2013.
Users can mine new blocks with their personal computers and graphics cards in the early stages of the network. However, with the development of specialized mining hardware (ASIC miners), the hash rate grew rapidly, increasing the mining difficulty. As a result, home PCs and graphics cards are no more appropriate for Bitcoin mining.
