What Is Distributed?

Information technology (IT) indicates that something has been shared among numerous systems, which may be located in different locations. For example, in distributed computing, processing and data are distributed over multiple computers, usually via a network. 

Before the availability of low-cost computing power on the desktop, computing was arranged in centralized "glass houses" (because the computers were commonly shown to visitors through picture windows). 

Most businesses now place applications and data where they may be used most efficiently, a combination of desktop workstations, local area network servers, regional servers, Web servers, and many other servers. 

The cloud model, inside which data and applications are delivered to users via the Internet, is one type of distributed computing implementation, as is grid computing, in which a large number of typically geographically scattered computers collaborate to accomplish compute-intensive activities. 

The Distributed Computing Environment (DCE), an early 1990s standard, influenced subsequent distribution schemes. Client-server, clustering, n-tier, and peer-to-peer are current distributed computing models (P2P).

Some Examples to Better Understand the Concept of Distributed

A distributed database stores elements of the database on numerous computers connected by a network. Users have access to the database section at their location, allowing them to retrieve data relevant to their job without interrupting the work of others. 

A distributed antenna system (DAS) is a network of tiny antennas deployed throughout a structure to act as repeaters. A DAS is intended to solve the problem of isolated areas of poor coverage within an extensive network. 

Remote instructional delivery, such as Web-based content, streaming video, videoconferencing, and other hybrids of electronic and traditional educational paradigms, is a component of distributed learning systems.

A distributed file system (DFS) is a client/server program that enables clients to access and process the data stored on the server as if it were local to their computer. A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) assault is a type of DoS attack in which a large number of infiltrated systems attack a single target, causing users of the targeted system to experience a loss of service.
