What Is Difficulty?

The term difficulty in cryptocurrency refers to the amount of effort needed to mine a block. Proof of Work blockchains follows specific rules that lead to climbs or falls based on the network's hashing power. This is done to ensure that blocks are not produced too rapidly and that the network remains secure.

Bitcoin, for example, has a block period of about 10 minutes (the average time it takes to find a new block). If finding blocks regularly takes longer, the target will be raised. Conversely, it will be reduced if blocks are discovered too soon.

This may be observed in the move in mining technology from traditional desktop or even laptop computers to GPUs and, more recently, dedicated ASICs run in massive, heavily regulated farm environments. Cryptographic challenges are made even more difficult to compensate for advancements in device speed. This difficulty is regularly adjusted to achieve a specified number of blocks mined every hour.

Current Situation of Difficulty

The difficulty on the Bitcoin blockchain has skyrocketed. Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin, most likely mined the genesis block using a standard desktop computer. The difficulty level was set at 1 at this stage. As of this writing, the Bitcoin difficulty is approximately 20 trillion now.

Bitcoin miners who are successful are rewarded with fresh coins. Nevertheless, Bitcoin is built with a strict upper limit on the number of blocks that may be mined. No new coins will be minted when this threshold is achieved, but mining power (or hash power) would still be necessary to keep the network running. To promote this, the mining rewards will be changed; rather than receiving coins, successful miners would receive a part of the fees involved with transacting on the platform.
