What is a Block Reward?

The cryptocurrency awarded to miners whenever they effectively validate a new block is referred to as a block reward. The block reward consists of two parts: a block subsidy and transaction fees. The block subsidy is made up of newly created currencies and makes up the majority of a block reward.

The remaining portion comprises all payments made by the transactions in the block. Since the block reward is virtually completely made up of the block subsidy, it's typical to hear people refer to it as the block reward when they're talking about it. As a result, the term "block reward" does not compensate for the fees in common usage.

Understanding the Full Scope of a Block Reward

The block subsidy in Bitcoin began at 50 BTC and now decreases in halves every 210,000 blocks (almost once every four years). Bitcoin halving is a term for this type of procedure. In 2012, the block subsidy was cut to 25 BTC; then, in 2016, it dropped to 12.5 BTC. In May 2020, the next halving will take place.

As the first transaction is registered in the given block, block rewards are awarded to the applicable miner. Currently, only exceptionally large mining operations using expensive technology under strictly regulated circumstances and in places with cheap energy prices can be lucrative.

Furthermore, Ethereum, bitcoin's major cryptocurrency rival, also uses block rewards to compensate miners. The reward in Ethereum is a digital token known as "ether," which is awarded each time a miner successfully provides the mathematical proof of a new block.

Miners, like bitcoin miners, are paid a transaction charge known as a "gas" cost. Unlike bitcoin, there is no limitation to the amount of Ethereum ether tokens that could be issued, and they are created significantly faster—in seconds rather than approximately 10 minutes. As a result, the total number of blocks in the Ethereum chain exceeds that of the bitcoin chain.
