What Is a Supercomputer?

Supercomputers are different from traditional household computers because of their processing capacity and the speed with which they can carry out operations. Therefore, we can say that supercomputers have better processing units. 

History of the Supercomputer

Seymour Cray is the inventor credited with designing the first supercomputer, which could output more computations than the general-purpose computers of the time.  Control Data Corporation introduced the first supercomputers in the 1960s. At that time, supercomputers were not as widely needed as they are now.

The processing capacity of a supercomputer is measured in FLOPS, which is short for Floating-point Operations Per Second. Right now, the most powerful supercomputers can perform at a speed of one hundred quadrillion FLOPS.

Applications of the Supercomputer

At present, supercomputers play an essential role in the technological advancements we experience. However, the most important use of supercomputers that most of us do not even know about is for weather prediction. 

Meteorologists depend on supercomputers to process vast volumes of weather data from all over the world to get as accurate a forecast as possible. Because of the many data points meteorology uses, supercomputers are extremely valuable in forecasting weather conditions on a global scale.

Governments all over the world want to invest in the development of supercomputers. As a result, a worldwide race is going on between countries to be the next one to develop the best supercomputer. In 2017, China, the United States, and the European Union were competing against each other to design the first-ever computer capable of processing one quintillion FLOPS. 

Even with the tough competition for the next supercomputer, supercomputers are still not at their maximum potential. For example, according to meteorologists, a supercomputer that can process one sextillion FLOPS is needed to build a complete two-week weather model. Unfortunately, such capacity does not exist at the moment. However, while supercomputers have a long way to go, they are essential to our digital development.
