What Is a Ledger?

A ledger is a document or record file where all monetary and financial transactions are recorded in the form of debits and credits. Usually, ledgers also hold the balance for every person and account included in the records, along with its date and other details.

Commonly used for accounting and financial purposes, physical ledgers are almost obsolete as digital ledgers are used to keep records. Businesses need ledgers to record their transactions for sales, procurement of raw materials, and employee payroll. 

Ledgers, Blockchain, and Cryptocurrencies 

In the blockchain world, blockchains are a highly secured form of ledgers. Since blockchains are built up of blocks of information that track transactions occurring between crypto users. For instance, the Ethereum blockchain is a ledger of blocks of information about Ethereum transactions.  

In cryptocurrencies, a ledger is a record management system that keeps track of the balances and transactions of all participants in a chain or transaction. The beauty of blockchain ledgers is that both parties to a transaction can check their balances or the information available on the ledger. 

The blockchain ledger is built on a type of distributed ledger technology that lists all transactions in blocks that cannot be changed, giving it a quality known as immutable.

Ledgers are usually decentralized and are not under the control of a single authority or node. 

Blockchains are more of a distributed ledger technology (DLT) type as they are suitable for tracking and recording all digital data. Therefore, they can be used in a wide range of applications like logistics and healthcare. 

Once a block on the blockchain reaches its maximum capacity, new blocks are added. Preselected network nodes are then given copies of the ledger to retain. These nodes are also known as full nodes and have administrative oversight of the network and users. 

There are some issues in using a ledger on the blockchain as the blockchain requires that each transaction be recorded on the network, which raises security concerns. These are fears that hackers and regulatory bodies can track public records and get information about network users.
