What is a Bear Market?

A bear market is a period during which stock prices fall by 20% or more from their recent highs, accompanied by widespread investor pessimism, fear, and a sustained downward trend in the market.

Definition of a bear market

A market is considered to have entered a bear market when asset prices fall by at least 20% from their recent highs. The closing price of the S&P 500 index, which tracks the prices of the 500 largest U.S. publicly traded companies, is most often used to assess whether the U.S. stock market is in a bear market. Bear markets are the opposite of bull markets, which are typically characterized by a rise of at least 20% from market lows. Bear markets are considered more severe than market corrections, a term typically used to describe a price decline of at least 10% from a recent high. Historically, the U.S. market has entered a bear market, on average, once every six years over the past 150 years.

What causes a bear market, and what are its main stages?

This phase often follows market inflation and significant increases in corporate valuations. A bear market consists of four main stages, which are: a phase of rising prices and investor optimism before the pullback, a phase of sharp price declines and deteriorating economic indicators, then a phase where speculators enter the markets to drive up prices and trading volume, and finally, a phase where the sharpness of the price decline slows and the impact of positive news reemerges in the markets.

What should you do in a bear market?

Prepare by building an emergency fund so you don't have to use your invested capital, then build a diversified portfolio of all types of assets to mitigate the impact of a sharp decline on your portfolio. Maintain the time frame for your investments, because the longer you stay in the market, the lower your likelihood of loss and the higher your likelihood of profit.
