What Is a Wei?

Wei is basically the smallest unit of ether, the cryptocurrency coin utilized on the Ethereum network. 1 ether is equal to 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 wei (1018). Another way of looking at it is that one wei is basically one quintillionth of an ether.

Working Mechanism of a Wei

People have been wondering how to generate money out of digital asset tokens like ether as the price of certain cryptocurrencies has risen tremendously. A US dollar is only divided into 100 pieces, and the atomic unit of US currency is the penny. 

However, digital cryptocurrencies are split into much, much smaller components. To appropriately describe the quantity of a transaction that may seem to be a very small fraction in terms of ether but has a substantial value when converted to US dollars or some other real-world currencies, new units have been established to properly identify and also support the transactions. 

Ether which is the smallest unit of the ethereum cryptocurrency, is known as the wei after Wei Dai, a cryptography activist known for advocating for the wider use of strong cryptography and privacy-oriented technologies. Ether has numerous different names for various units of wei. 

The names of these sub-units imply the number of the units (for instance, a kwei is a kilo, which is a thousand wei), but they also have informal names. The kwei, for instance, is also referred to as a "babbage," and the gwei is sometimes known as a "shannon."
