What is Issuance?

The simplest definition of issuance is establishing something and then making it accessible. In other words, an entity is "issued" to an individual or group. In the world of cryptocurrency, issuance is used synonymously with tokens. Any time a new token is issued, it is added to the total supply.

Token issuance is a critical concept in the cryptocurrency and blockchain space. Issuing tokens is governed by intricate algorithm computations that direct the number of tokens needed for the blockchain ecosystem to perform optimally. In addition, each blockchain requires a different number of tokens in circulation, which is also determined by an algorithm.

Since there are several blockchain-based projects in the cryptocurrency market, there is no universal manner in which tokens are issued. Blockchains have unique consensus mechanisms, which is why the method of token issuance is not uniform. Before a token is launched, a white paper is published, which contains the precise number of tokens that will be circulated upon release.

For instance, when Bitcoin's white paper was published a year before its release, it quoted explicitly that precisely twenty-one million tokens would be in circulation, nothing more, nothing less. Therefore, when the twenty-one million thresholds are reached, Bitcoin issuance will be ceased.

Although Bitcoin is the original cryptocurrency and has led the market since its inception, developers of other tokens have not followed its example of setting a maximum supply limit. Furthermore, since more than twenty thousand cryptocurrencies are trading on the market right now, there are bound to be differences in the protocols.

Specific platforms employ a method known as token burning, which is the exact opposite of token issuance. If a token is burned, it is essentially eradicated for good. However, plenty of consensus mechanisms use a combination of token issuance and token burning so that the network of nodes is compliant.
