Who Is a Hacker?

In general, the term hacker can refer to someone with a firm knowledge of computers, especially programmers and cybersecurity professionals. In common parlance, a hacker is someone who attempts to exploit the vulnerabilities in a computer system or network. 

These are also known as security hackers. The meaning of the term "hacker" is still being debated. There was no negative connotation in the traditional meaning. It was more about tinkering with technology to resolve problems or attain specific aims. 

Today, the most common definition is illicit operations carried out by security hackers. As a result, we can describe hackers as those who use their technical skills to circumvent cybersecurity barriers and gain illegal access to digital information as well as computing environments. 

Hackers may sometimes use their expertise to interrupt or disrupt a specific software. Security hackers are typically categorized as white hats, black hats, or grey hats based on their approach and motivations.

What Is the Purpose of a Hacker?

As previously stated, the term "hacker" was originally used to characterize someone who sought novel methods to push computers beyond their predefined bounds. Today, however, the phrase usually refers to someone who attempts to violate the security of a network or system. 

From those who hack an account password to those who use complex methods to modify a machine's hardware, the hackers are notoriously famous for the biggest threat in the cryptocurrency world. The outcomes can be favorable or detrimental based on the hacker's intent. Today, hackers are characterized as wearing different colored "hats."

Different Types of Hackers

White hat hackers: sometimes known as ethical hackers, work to improve security by identifying and patching flaws. Many white hats are even hired as full-time employees with the consent of their objective. Others pursue bounty schemes and hacking contests, which pay them for each security defect they discover or system they manage to compromise. Most white hat hackers have a college degree in information security as well as computer science, and many are even ethical hacking certified.

Black hat hackers: usually known as "crackers," labor without consent against their objectives. They seek vulnerabilities to exploit for nefarious or personal gain. A black hat hacker's motivations could include acquiring money, obtaining notoriety, stealing classified information, disseminating misinformation, or even eavesdropping on national intelligence conversations.

Grey hat hackers: as the term indicates, fall between the previous two types. They typically utilize their talents to gain unauthorized access to systems and networks, but they do so for a variety of reasons. For example, grey hat hackers may discover vulnerabilities and disclose them to the targeted website or program proprietors. They could also offer their assistance in repairing it for a fee. Although they are not necessarily motivated by monetary gain, grey hats frequently engage in unlawful or immoral behavior. Hacktivists, another type of hacker, are frequently called grey hat hackers since they are motivated by political or social objectives.
