What Are Decentralized Applications (DApp)?
Decentralized applications (dApps) are digital applications or programs that run on a blockchain or peer-to-peer (P2P) computer network rather than a single computer. DApps (sometimes spelled "dapps") exist outside the jurisdiction and control of a singular authority.
DApps, frequently constructed on the Ethereum platform, can be created for a range of purposes like gaming, banking, and social media. While there are multiple definitions of a DApp, they are typically defined as apps that have the following features:
Open Source - The source code is made accessible to the public on purpose, which means that anybody can evaluate, use, copy, and alter it.
DApps are decentralized because they run on blockchain networks and are not managed by a single institution or authority. Rather, they are managed by several users (or nodes).
Cryptographically secure - The application is cryptographically secure, meaning all data is recorded and stored in a public blockchain. There isn't just one point of failure.
Further Understanding the Concept of Decentralized Applications (DApp)
A typical web app, like Uber or Twitter, operates on a computer system owned and maintained by an organization, allowing it complete control over the app and its operations. As a result, several users may be on one side, yet a single organization manages the backend.
DApps can run on either a peer-to-peer or a blockchain network. For example, BitTorrent, Tor, and Popcorn Time are software that operates on computers connected to a P2P network, in which numerous participants are receiving content, feeding or seeding content, or performing both roles simultaneously.
In the realm of cryptocurrencies, dApps operate on a blockchain network in a public, open-source, decentralized environment, free of control and intervention from any single authority. A developer, for example, can design a Twitter-like dApp and place it on a blockchain where almost any user can post messages. Moreover, no one, including the app's makers, can erase the messages once they are uploaded.
Centralized and Decentralized Apps
A single corporation owns a centralized app. The application software for a centralized app is stored on one or more company-controlled servers. You'll engage with the app like a user by downloading a version of it and then submitting and receiving data from the company's servers.
A decentralized app (commonly known as a dApp or dapp) runs on a blockchain or peer-to-peer computer network. It allows users to conduct transactions openly with one another without depending on a central authority. A dApp user will pay a cryptocurrency fee to the developer in order to download and utilize the program's source code.
