What Is Cryptography?
Cryptography is an area of study and practice that secures information by preventing unauthorized third parties from reading it. Basically, cryptography is the science of concealing information.
Modern cryptography, in particular, employs mathematical theories and computation to encrypt and decrypt information or ensure the integrity and authenticity of the information. In addition, advancements in information technology have made data easily accessible, which has both a positive and negative impact.
Online data is vulnerable to a variety of dangers, including theft and corruption. One approach that has made it possible to secure information from some of the risks involved with data storage and distribution is cryptography (or cryptology). To say the notion of encrypting data is novel is an understatement.
People have been concealing messages since before the internet era to avoid undesired audiences from reading them. However, the rising use of digital devices pushed the science of encryption to new heights.
Encryption and Decryption
In a basic text encryption procedure, plaintext (material that can be plainly understood) is encrypted, resulting in ciphertext (which is unreadable). Doing so can ensure that someone with a certain decryption key can only view the information supplied.
It is possible to communicate sensitive data via insecure networks by employing specialized encryption algorithms. The amount of encryption will be determined by the level of protection required for the data. For example, the type of protection used on conventional personal files (such as contacts) differs from that utilized on bitcoin networks.
Understanding the importance of cryptography within cryptocurrency systems requires understanding how it works. Most blockchain systems, such as Bitcoin's, employ a specific set of cryptographic protocols that enable them to serve as a decentralized and public ledger via which digital transactions can be conducted in a highly secure manner.
Working Mechanism of Cryptography
Modern cryptography encompasses several fields of study, but the most important are those dealing with symmetric encryption, asymmetric encryption, digital signatures, and hash functions. In addition, the Bitcoin protocol uses cryptographic proofs to safeguard the network and confirm the validity of every transaction.
Digital signatures ensure that each user can only spend cash from his own wallet once and that these funds cannot be spent more than once. For example, suppose Jane sends two bitcoins to Bob. In that case, she initiates a transaction, simply a message confirming the addition of two bitcoins to Bob's wallet while withdrawing the coins from Jane's wallet.
Nevertheless, jane can only do so by producing a digital signature. The Hashcash function, which provides the Proof of Work consensus method and the mining process, is another crucial component of the Bitcoin Protocol (responsible for securing the network, validating transactions, and creating new coins).
Hashcash employs the SHA-256 cryptographic algorithm. Cryptography is a key component of blockchain technology and, as such, is critical for any cryptocurrency. The use of cryptographic proofs on distributed networks facilitated the development of trustless economic systems, giving rise to Bitcoin and other decentralized cryptocurrencies.
