What Is Solidity?
Solidity is an advanced object-oriented programming language used in the Ethereum blockchain. It is an excellent tool for writing smart contracts, as they are self-executing code that supports complex functions.
The language relates to the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), which acts as the abstraction layer between the running code and execution machine. It is linked with the C++, Python, and JavaScript languages. Solidity must be accumulated to low-level machine instructions commonly called Opcodes through a compiler, as the EVM cannot directly compile it.
Solidity is reasonably easy to switch between and for writing code, especially for developers with existing programming knowledge. Gavin Woods initially recommended it in 2014. He is the founder of Solidity and Polkadot. However, solidity was developed by the Ethereum foundation and Solidity project team.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Solidity
The language is statically-typed, which reduces typing errors and syntax issues by cross-checking with the program’s source code. Solidity also supports inheritance, which are user-defined complex objects and libraries to make programming easier. Using solidity has allowed developers to produce unique types of complex and automated financial, gaming, auction-based, management, and other applications.
Solidity also has some issues like most programming languages. The absolute nature of blockchain guarantees that a smart contract can’t be removed or changed. This means that every single bit of code has to be flawless; otherwise, it leaves the system vulnerable to being hacked or exploited since it will remain as long as the Ethereum network does.
Solidity is also susceptible to reentrancy attacks and some other security threats. In addition, the language was designed at a time when the Ethereum network wasn’t used. Therefore, its design needs to be revised to meet current requirements.
