What Is a Hash Function?

Hash functions generate a fixed-size hash value from a variable-size transaction input. A hash function is a repeated sequence of defined activities which can be used to turn an arbitrary data stream of variable length into one of fixed length and format, known as the hash.

Characteristics of Hash Functions

Hash functions generally use data structures in computing systems for activities such as message integrity verification and information authentication. They are regarded cryptographically "weak" since they can be solved in polynomial time, but they are not easily decipherable. 

Cryptographic hash functions add security characteristics to standard hash functions, making it even more difficult to determine the contents of a message or information concerning recipients and senders. Hash functions, in particular, display the following characteristics:

1. It should be simple to compute the output about any given input, but almost hard to reverse the process and compute the input of a known outcome.

2. Determinism entails feeding a certain input into an algorithm that should always result in the same outcome.

3. Collision resistance – it should be highly unlikely for two separate inputs to create the same output.

4. The avalanche effect states that changing even a single piece of data in the input must result in a drastically different output.

Hash functions are also important in mining proof-of-work cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC), which employs the SHA-256 hash function. Miners must first produce a hash value that is less than a specific threshold, known as the target, in order to add a fresh block to the blockchain and collect their reward of newly-mined Bitcoin. 

Because hashes are pseudorandom, and it is impossible to anticipate the output of any input before putting it through the hash function, miners cannot create new Bitcoins anywhere. Instead, they must prove the work they have done.
