What Is the Cloud?
The term "cloud" in computer science refers to the collective pool of resources made available to various users via the Internet. These resources are typically associated with data storage and computing power, but they can also comprise many types of services, apps, networks, and servers.
Cloud-based resources are typically simply and conveniently accessible, and they can be dynamically modified to serve numerous purposes with varying levels of adaptability. As a result, cloud computing technology is now widely used in many aspects of human life.
Various Examples of the Cloud
A cloud is used to build a variety of services and applications. On-demand streaming services, for example, leverage cloud computing capabilities to scale quickly and give the greatest customer experience possible. Cloud computing is also used by popular online messaging and voice call programs, such as Skype and WhatsApp, to provide high-quality communication among their users.
Other examples are Microsoft Office 365 and Google G Suite cloud-based products, which enable millions of people globally by allowing them to work and interact in real-time almost anywhere and at any time.
Service Models of Cloud Computing
Unlike a microprocessor or a cellphone, cloud computing is not a singular piece of technology. Instead, it is a system made up of three major services: software-as-a-service (SaaS), infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS), and platform-as-a-service (PaaS) (PaaS).
Software-as-a-service (SaaS) refers to the licensing of a software application to clients. Licenses are often supplied on a pay-as-you-go or on-demand basis. For example, such type of system is available in Microsoft Office 365.
Infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) is a means of providing it all from operating systems to servers and storage as an on-demand service via IP-based connectivity. As a result, clients can avoid purchasing software or servers by obtaining these resources through an outsourcing, on-demand service. IBM Cloud and Microsoft Azure are two popular examples of IaaS systems.
Platform-as-a-service (PaaS) is the most complicated of the three layers of cloud computing. PaaS is similar to SaaS, with the most significant distinction being that rather than delivering software online, it is a platform for developing software that is supplied via the Internet. Platforms like Salesforce.com and Heroku fit into this approach.
