What Is a General Public License?
GPL, aka General Public License, is a free, copyleft software permit. GPL allows anybody to use, view freely, copy, share, change, as well as circulate a software program or even other types of material.
Background of General Public License
The GPL was created for the GNU Project and was the first copyleft license adopted for general usage. Richard Stallman, the very creator of the Free Software Foundation, invented it in early 1989. (FSF).
In contrast to copyright, the phrase copyleft signifies that the GPL permits the publication of derivative works while requiring them to be distributed with the same license terms and conditions as the original work.
As a result, users cannot use GPL-licensed software and then publish a derivative work under a different license. Several free software licenses, like the Berkley Software Distribution (BSD) and MIT licenses, do not fall within this category.
General Public License Compared To Other Free Software Licenses
The BSD and MIT licenses are examples of permissive licenses. Even though both copyleft and permissive licenses enable users to copy, tweak, and distribute software, their terms differ slightly. On the one hand, copyleft licensing ensure that open-source software stays freely available to everybody.
It also prevents someone else from profiting from work that was made freely available. Copyleft supporters are more interested in preserving some authority over their work. Permissive licenses, however, allow the software to be extensively utilized as the original developers are recognized and credited for their work.
In other terms, a permissive license allows anybody, under any permission, to copy, alter, and distribute a work. However, the only requirement is that credit is given to the original creators. The GPL license is, for now, the most extensively used method of distributing free and open-source software. This license is used to license popular free software products such as GNU Emacs, the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC), as well as the Linux kernel.
