What is a Dusting Attack?

A dusting Attack is an attack aimed at determining the identity of the wallet's owner, which can then be utilized in phishing scams. A dusting assault is a malicious act aiming to reveal the identity of the owner of a cryptocurrency wallet by sending a large number of small transactions into a large number of private wallets. An attacker could exploit the dust transaction to trace activity within the wallet to get information about the owner's identity.

What Happens When a Dusting Attack Occurs?

In the summer of 2019, hundreds and thousands of dust transactions were executed within Litecoin wallets. Thankfully, the attack's origin was discovered before any damage was done. They later stated they intended to publicize their mining pool to the Litecoin ecosystem. 

Despite the incident's innocuous ending, it did illustrate the simplicity with which such assaults may be carried out - especially since attacks like the one on Litecoin can occur on any public blockchain.

How Attackers Dust a Wallet

Attackers have generally realized that a huge number of cryptocurrency users usually pay far too little attention to the virtually tiny quantities of funds they possess in the dust. Once a wallet has been dusted, they will track data on the impacted accounts' activities to determine which companies or individuals they are affiliated with.

Because you don't typically supply personal details when establishing a new wallet or address, you won't be able to prove theft if a hacker acquires access to their coins - even if they could, it would be pointless.
